Experience
I'm passionate about helping students get excited about computer science and math. I do this by helping students to defeat their fear of numbers. Numbers are a language like any other language; it can be frightening if you don't know the vocabulary or how it all works. However, once you have mastered the basics, things start to fall into place and math becomes an exciting challenge rather than an obstacle. At Virginia Tech, I decided to break free of the nerd stereotype by studying communications and double minoring in computer science and math. After college, I taught for Teach For America, where I served low-income communities for a few years. This took me far away from my home state of Virginia to Hawaii. In Hawaii, I worked as a math and science teacher to seventh graders. I'm proud to say my students passed the standardized math test 15 percent above the average! Later, I moved to St. Louis to be with my wife and continued to teach. Although I am changing careers, I still desire to teach, which is why I want to tutor! In addition to teaching and computer science, I enjoy hiking, drumming and beatboxing, and the occasional video game.
