Experience

Teaching Philosophy: Bottom line? I want learning to be fun. Every student is different and a tutor needs to get to know the student personally as well as know their strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. I am very personable and adaptable. I get to know what works best for a student and attempt to show them how the basics they're learning now will be applicable in the real world. Knowing the real world application invests a student in learning the material. I hope that my enthusiasm and love of science, engineering, and math will help the student see learning not a a chore to struggle through but a game to figure out. Previous Experience: For the last 4 years I have taught in a variety of circumstances. I have lead 8 week classes in SAT/ACT math and ACT science. I have provided private tutoring in GRE/SAT/ACT Math, ACT Science, and real estate appraisal. My former students have improved their ACT scores 3-6 points. All of this is in addition to the 3 semesters in graduate school I spent as an official teaching assistant (detailed below in my background section). I have also privately tutored pre-calculus and physics for extended periods of time. Finally, I often volunteer in programs that promote science, technology, engineering, and math to elementary through high school aged students. Also, I am available to tutor via skype if one-on-one tutoring is not possible. Background: I have always loved learning and sharing that knowledge with others. During my undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering from Clemson University I often spent additional hours in the library unofficially tutoring my classmates. It has always been important to me for everyone to understand the material and test well. I enjoyed tutoring and teaching my classmates so much that I decided to pursue a PhD so that I can continue to teach for the rest of my life. I recently completed a PhD in biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University. As a graduate student I spent 3 semesters as a teaching assistant where I not only graded papers but lead recitation sessions and provided private instruction during office hours. After completing the teaching assist requirements of my program I pursued teaching as an extracurricular activity. Currently, I am a post-doctoral trainee in Biomedical Engineering as part of the Washington University Research collaborative with Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Test Scores: SAT: 1400 - 660 Verbal, 740 Math GRE: 770 Math
